What does this tweet tell you about President Trump’s knowledge of weather and climate?

weather vs climate

climate

the general weather conditions in an area over a long period, normally calculated over 30 years.

weather

the state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time including heat, cloudiness, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.

Define weather and climate. Explain how they are both similar and different.

Weather Instruments

Describe how weather data is collected

Meteorologists use a wide variety of different instruments to measure weather conditions, but many of these instruments fall into relatively common, overarching categories.

Thermometers, for instance, come in traditional liquid-in-glass forms and newer electronic forms, but both measure temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Other instruments measure aspects of weather like rainfall, pressure, humidity and wind speed. These instruments and measurements allow meteorologists to make predictions on weather conditions in the near future. (Source

STEVENSON SCREEN

This is a Stevenson screen. It is designed to house weather instruments in a way to ensure reliable weather data. What design features are visible in this photo that help to ensure reliable weather data?

A Stevenson screen is a shelter or an enclosure to shield meteorological instruments against precipitation and direct heat radiation from outside sources, while still allowing air to circulate freely around them. It forms part of a standard weather station.

The Stevenson screen holds instruments that may include thermometers (ordinary, maximum/minimum), a hygrometer, a psychrometer, a dewcell, a barometer and a thermograph.

Its purpose is to provide a standardised environment in which to measure temperature, humidity, dewpoint and atmospheric pressure.

Draw a labelled diagram of a Stevenson Screen and write a paragraph describing it.

PRACTICE EXAM QUESTION

(i) Describe how the atmospheric pressure changed over the 24 hour period. [3]

(ii) Compare the weather at 16.00 (15 October) and 02.00 hrs (16 October). [5]
